Origins of the Cathedral

In origin the Cathedral reflects the late Romanesque transitional style, with its emphasis on Gothic art. It had a “T” plan with three naves.

Patriarch Bertrand of Saint Geniès (1334-1335) consecrated the church in 1335 with the name Saint Mary Major, as well as overseeing the completion of the construction and erecting the baptistry, completed towards the end of 1348.
